TBC Hot Chocolate with Bitters

Bitters has many uses, it doesn't have to be all about cocktails. To showcase how versatile our Aromatic Bitters are, we created a from scratch hot chocolate thats smooth, complex and delicious. This recipe will ensure you stay nice and warm on those cold winter days. This recipe is a favourite at the winter farmers market!

The Formula

Base

 24 fl. oz. Whole Milk

8 fl. oz. Half and Half

 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Depth

 2 tablespoons Light Brown Sugar

 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

 8 Dashes TBC Aromatic Bitters

Glass

 Mug

Finish

 Whipped Cream

 Crushed Peppermint Candy Canes Shavings

Method

Add the milk, half and half, vanilla and sugar to a medium size pot and place on a stove top over medium high heat. While stirring regularly, slowly heat up the milk mixture to just before boiling. Its important to not let the milk boil, for it will cause the end result to be grainy. When the milk mixture is close to boiling, place the chocolate chips in a microwavable bowl. Heat chocolate chips for about 1 minute or until they start to melt. Stir the chips together to create a smooth thick liquid chocolate.

Add the liquid chocolate to the milk mixture while stirring continuously. The chocolate will be completely dissolved into the milk mixture when all the fine chocolate grains are no longer floating around in the pot. You want the mixture to be nice and smooth.

Once the chocolate is completely dissolved add the dashes of aromatic bitters to the pot. Keep heating the mixture to just before boiling and remove from heat. If you want a smoother hot chocolate, strain the liquid through a kitchen strainer into another serving container or into serving mugs. This will remove any undissolved milk and chocolate solids. Top with whipped cream and peppermint shavings and serve.

Tip: Heating the milk up over high heat will cause it to burn to the bottom of the pot. Don't rush it, the end result is worth waiting for.

Serving Size: 4 cups
