DIY Bitters Equipment & Kit

Tools for Making Bitters

When it comes to making your own bitters, there are a couple things you will need to have on hand. You might already have most of the items sitting in your kitchen and home bar. Here is a list of the items you will need:

Chef's Knife or Paring Knife: You'll need a good chef's or paring knife for cutting fresh fruit and chopping herbs.

Cutting Board: A large wood or nonporous polyethylene board will be needed.

Peeler or Zester: You'll need a peeler or zester to remove the zest from fruit.

Mason Jars: A wide-mouth quart size mason jar will be needed to put all your ingredients in. We recommend having at least one additional jar on hand for transferring the liquid to when removing the solids.

Cheesecloth or Strainer: We prefer to use cheesecloth to strain out any solids from our bitters. If you have the patients of a sloth, feel free to use gold coffee filters instead.

Funnels: Two types of funnels will be needed, one large funnel for filling jars and one small funnel for filling a dropper bottle.

2-ounce Dropper Bottles: Once your bitters are ready to be used, you'll need dropper bottles to store them for quick and easy access.

Mortar and Pestle: This item is not essential to have, but it will help to break-up pods, seeds and bark.
